Alan Nochumson Selected as “Best of the Bar” by the Philadelphia Business Journal

Written by: Alan Nochumson

The Philadelphia Business Journal has selected Alan Nochumson as one of 2020 Best of The Bar honorees. A panel of judges have selected 40 top lawyers, from both small and big law firms, who within the last 12 months have distinguished themselves in their practices.

Since 2006, Alan has been representing clients throughout the Philadelphia region, from real estate to litigation to business counseling and more.

Notably, in 2019-2020, Alan represented a client in one of the largest variance projects granted by the city of Philadelphia’s Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) in the ever-developing Norris Square section of Philadelphia. Working collaboratively with the community, he obtained governmental approval for the property owner to consolidate 19 parcels into one on the 2400 block of North 2nd Street. This allowed for the construction of a 102-unit apartment complex with an accessory parking lot consisting of 42 vehicle spaces (including three electric vehicle spaces) and 38 off-street bicycle spaces.

To obtain such governmental approval, Alan dedicated his time researching, developing, and negotiating a community benefits agreement with the coordinating Registered Community Organization of Norris Square Community Alliance. As part of the community benefits agreement, 6 of the units in the apartment complex will be dedicated to affordable housing, and a portion of the exterior façade of the apartment complex will be dedicated to displaying artwork from local residents.

This variance project is indicative of his encyclopedia of knowledge and know-how around the intricacies of zoning, real estate, and development in the city.

Additionally, even though he is leading a bandwidth of only a 4-person attorney team, Alan still has one of the largest land use and zoning practices in Philadelphia. According to Phila.gov, Alan has filed more zoning appeals than any other attorneys in Philadelphia from June of 2019 to August 2020. His extensive experience is backed by hundreds of success stories and loyal clients who continue to seek his counsel.

When Alan is not lawyering, this Fairmount area resident is coaching his son’s youth basketball team, sitting on a mayoral-appointed board or commission, volunteering at his synagogue, or supporting community charitable endeavors.

Alan believes strongly about the positive impact arts and culture have on our youth. For example, he sponsored underprivileged girls to attend the summer camp of Girls Rock Philly, a youth-centered music organization dedicated to building an intergenerational community of girls, women, and trans and gender non-conforming people.

In addition, Alan currently serves on the Advisory Council of Lloyd Hall. This community recreation center provides a method to satisfy the recreational needs in the Fairmount area.

He also regularly donates money to nonprofit organizations including Legacy Of Hope’s PHL24, J.R. Masterman Home & School Association, Greater Eastern State Breakout 5K, and the “Striking Injustice” Fundraiser.

Most recently, inspired by the humanity that has been demonstrated by so many heroes during the COVID-19 crisis, Alan’s law firm, Nochumson P.C., thanked the entire staff of the emergency room at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center by partnering with a local business to prepare and drop off free lunch for the frontline.
