Power Players 2024: Alan Nochumson

Written by: Alan Nochumson

Check out the professionals who are finalists in the Power Players category as part of the Pennsylvania Legal Awards.

How did you remain effective in light of all the challenges the legal field faced?

Alan and his firm were able to remain effective in light of pandemic challenges because they have always relied heavily on technology and have always prided themselves on being innovative and forward-thinking (and thus did not have to implement dramatic changes when the world went virtual). Because Nochumson P.C. is a boutique law firm, they were able to quickly implement cloud-based solutions and new methods of communication to stay connected, even amidst the challenges of isolation. Alan himself was able to maintain outstanding relationships with his clients in an increasingly digital world by focusing not just on practicing the law, but on business development and streamlining communication. His clients frequently praise his availability, fast response time, and extensive knowledge of the law.

What is the best advice you ever received?

The best advice that Alan has ever received comes from Philadelphia’s very own Rocky Balboa. Despite the fact that Alan grew up in public housing in Brooklyn, he has always loved the Rocky movie and quotes it frequently amongst his fellow attorneys and students. The quote “…But it ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done…” particularly resonates with him. Alan realizes that life and the law can be intrinsically difficult and frustrating, but that it is often not about what happens but how it happens. Alan firmly believes that his challenges in life have made him a stronger person and that knowing how to pivot when undesirable circumstances demand it is imperative.

How did you develop your practice?

Alan developed his practice through grit and hard work. He cites “consistency, resilience, and a focus on perseverance” as the most important traits that an attorney, and especially a managing partner, can possess. He grew up without a lot of resources but realized that the power of not taking anything for granted, networking extensively, and putting his all into everything he did yield powerful results. He admittedly has always been very competitive and intent on building the best real estate practice that he could, which meant and means learning and staying updated on the law, following every possible opportunity (no matter how small), and staying committed to building his book of business (even during the pandemic). He has also always believed in the power of mentoring and has created a team of litigators and real estate attorneys who have taken his “building a practice, brick by brick” philosophy to heart.
